The garden in April and May
April & May | June & July | August & September
The Lower Garden is at its peak in April and May. The earlier varieties of Magnolia are followed by the beautifully-scented Campbellii with its bright pink flowers, accompanied by many different and unusual Camellias and Rhododendrons, all under-planted with daffodils, bluebells and crocuses.
The Upper garden, which is 17th Century in design, is more formally laid out and divided by Box, Yew and Beech hedging. In Spring colour from the tulips, daffodils and especially strongly scented wallflowers run the whole width of the top border of the orchard. As these fade the blossoms on the plum, pear, crab and apple trees start to appear. Some of the apples are of very old varieties.
